We had a great time on our mid-winter break down at Perrysburg last weekend. Larry Efaw and his family put on a great show which was enjoyed by the largest crowd in recent years, and we were glad we were among them.

The show was a great mix of regional and nationally touring bands and included the Deepwater Bluegrass, Wildwood Valley Boys, the Larkins, Summertown Road, Remington Ryde, Idletymes, the Prater Brothers, the Whittaker Brothers, Vertical Limit, Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, and the host band, the Bluegrass Mountaineers. Charlie Patton was the MC, and did a fine job,as usual. It is quite a thrill to see him sing both the US and Canadian National Anthems, a capella, to open the show.

Don’t every let anyone tell you that Rhonda doesn’t know where the camera is.

Hunter Berry and Rhonda Vincent

It was nice to see Larry supporting a local band on his show, in this case, Deepwater Bluegrass. These folks are single-handedly responsible for the great bluegrass shows which are presented at Glass City Opry. I hope you are attending them as often as you can, we sure are.

Deepwater Bluegrass

A special treat was seeing Janis, Lewis, Travis, and Jamison Lewis, who are appearing as The Lewis Tradition.

Janis Lewis Phillips

Jamison Lewis

Travis Lewis

Lewis Phillips

Although bluegrass purists would question the keyboard Jamison plays, it sounded just right with Lewis Family music, and eighteen-year old Jamison’s harmony blended right in. The new Lewis Tradition CD, Precious Memories, was on my must purchase list and I have been playing it almost full time since I got it home. The Lewis Tradition was headed to Marion, Virginia for a taping of Song of the Mountains, so watch for them on your PBS station soon.

One more little sample, then I invite you to check out the gallery for more photos. We remember Stanley as an eight-year old mandolin whiz kid, and have seen him play every instrument on stage.

Stanley Efaw

Enjoy the rest of the photos in the gallery.

The March, version of Joe Mullins’ fine show came off without a hitch on March 26 and 27. This well-run event was a pleasure to attend. As usual, the show had a top notch line-up. Some people just photograph well, actually, very well. Here are a few samples.

Joe Mullins traded in his banjo for a mandolin, while he belted out a couple with James King.

Jack Hicks of Summertown Road.

There are a total of 537 photos of this event in the gallery. The are organized by band name, alphabetically. You can use the thumbnail pages to scroll to your favorites.

The new white backdrop and the colored lights presented a challenge. The lights are distracting in the shots of complete bands. The previous black backdrop was far better for capturing good stage shots. We hope you enjoy the photos. Artists who appeared my contact us from the link at the bottom of the page for access to a private gallery, and complementary web-resolution downloads.

Last Friday, March 12 we were privileged to see Jack Hicks, Bo Isaac, Randy Thomas, and new band member Zach Rambo at the Kentuckians. We had a good time, and it looked like the band did, too. Bo had a cold, so Zach was singing more than I expected for a new band member. He did a fine job, singing, and on the mandolin. There were several good photos of Zach in the group.

Zach Rambo

Certain people photograph well, and all of Summertown road fit into that category.

Bo Isaac!

Summertown Road will be among the groups appearing at the Southern Ohio Indoor Music Festival March 26-27, so we are looking forward to seeing and hearing them there.

Summertown Road appeared at the Huron Valley Eagles, Flat Rock, Michigan on October 31, 2009. Bo Isaac is a favorite in the area. Band members are: Jack Hicks, banjo; Bo Isaac, guitar; Randy Thomas, bass guitar; and Don Rigsby, on mandolin and fiddle. Don is filling in while the band holds auditions.

Everyone had fun, and some important questions were answered last Saturday.

Was Jack laughing with Bo, or at him?

Or were they both laughing at Don?

Will Don play the guitar and sing so Bo can dance with the ladies?

How many ladies did Bo dance with?

Summertown road and a good time entertaining the crowd, and the crowd seemed to enjoy the show. You can see the rest of our photos in the gallery.
